Swift Driver Rewarded for Finding Lost Savings

By Kristen Record

For many a men it might have been time to make a decision. But for this driver there was no need because he only saw one choice. On an August morning, at a truckstop in Wamsutter, WY, Richard Greene, a six year shuttle driver with Swift Transportation, found a bag full of money in a restroom.

“On the paper holder was a Wells Fargo bag, so I thought somebody had left their cell phone, “ he said. He opened it up and found a large stack of $100 bills. I figured it was a beer man's, a pop man's and it was the company's money and it would get docked off his paycheck,” Greene says.

“I know how rough it was when I was raising my kids, so I decided to walk over and turn it in. I said, “I found it in the bathroom; it's full of money.” He said the woman behind the counter made a little gasp after looking in the bag. The owner of the bag, wishing to remain anonymous, turned out to be 30 minutes up the road before he turned around, expecting the money to be long gone. But Greene, 61, had returned every penny. The money turned out to total $15,000 in one hundred dollar bills and $2,500 in gold bullion. The owner had withdrawn the money planning to buy a motorcycle.

Greene says he returned to the same truckstop the next week, and the woman behind the counter asked him how much he thought was in the bag. He guessed about $2000 and that was when he was told there was actually $17,500 in the bag.

Later, Green received a call from a woman who lived with the money's owner to thank him for his good deed. He then received a check for $1000 in the mail as a reward. I really didn't think I deserved it for doing the right thing,” Greene says. “But my wife said, “You should keep it.” I told her I didn't do anything to deserve it. I would have been awful just to carry it out.” Greene lives in Scotts Bluff, Nebraska, with his wife. He has four children and four grandchildren.
