TCA Contractor of the Year Receives Grand Prize, International 9900ix
Dart contractor Carroll Benn Receives Keys to Brand New International Tractor
Quincy, Ill. (December 20, 2004) – Holiday gifts came
early for Carroll Benn this year. As the
Truckload Carriers Association’s 2003 Independent Contractor of
the Year, Benn took delivery of his new International
9900ix at the Prairie International dealership in Quincy,
Ill., last week. The
tractor is the largest part of the prize package that Benn received
for winning the 17th annual TCA Independent Contractor
of the Year award.
Benn won the award based on his safety record and exemplary work performance. He has spent 35 years on the road as a professional truck driver, including the last 18 years as an independent contractor with Dart Transit Company. During that time, he has logged over three million miles without an accident or a late delivery. Prior to winning the TCA’s Independent Contractor of the Year Award, Dart and the National Safety Council have recognized Benn with eight other awards.
Benn remarked that it is easy to do work that you love. “Driving a truck was my childhood dream,” said Benn. “After 35 years on the road, I wouldn’t do anything else, no matter how much it paid.”
International Truck and Engine donated the new tractor,
which Benn has modified to his specifications. As a co-sponsor with the
Truckload Carriers Association, International was proud to
donate one of the 9000-series trucks, which are built to suit
independent
contractors.
This is the seventeenth tractor that International has awarded as
sponsor of TCA’s Independent Contractor of the Year Contest.
Benn’s International 9900ix features all aluminum wheels, a 525 horsepower Cummins ISX engine, Road Ranger 18 speed transmission, a dual bright finish air cleaner, dual bright finish cab mounted exhaust, loads of bright finish exterior options and a 72 inch sky rise pro sleeper with National Premium Cloth Seats that bring comfort to the cab. The standard wide-track axles allow for excellent handling and the air suspension provides a smooth ride. The interior is built for comfort, inclusive of a temperature-controlled Hi-Rise sleeper with Eagle trim, a locker, utility cabinet, TV/VCR, refrigerator and a tower wardrobe. Keyless entry and power windows also provide added convenience. Overall, it’s a magnificent, bright-finished truck that ensures Benn will continue to stand out as the TCA contractor of the year.
Benn plans to continue with Dart in the years to come, and the company is happy to have him.
Says Jim Thammes, Dart’s safety director, “Carroll is a consummate professional whose appearance, demeanor, and infectious smile make him a role model for our industry. Contractors, like Carroll, are the reason that Dart is able to thrive in a highly competitive trucking industry.” Mr. Benn is one of five Dart contractors named the TCA Independent Contractor of the Year in the last 10 years. Additional information is available at www.dart.net.
Dart began trucking operations in 1934, and now ranks as the 15th largest dry van truckload carrier in the country with operating centers in Minneapolis, Dallas, Texas and Louisville.
