SWIFT strongarming & I haven't even started school

Postby Ian on Tue Feb 12, 2008 12:25 pm

Over the last month I've been trying to get a sponsor for school. Since I don't have any experience there are only a few that'll work with me. SWIFT, USA Trucking, CR England etc.

Well, I went ahead with SWIFT since they are the ones I can get most info on the easiest. I know, if I even make it through school, that I'm gonna get screwed on miles and other things, but this is just to get me in the door then I'm going to try to get into something better.

Two days ago I found that there was an independant school that was only 20 minutes away. I'm thinking this will be much better than having to go 800 miles to the SWIFT school in Tennessee.

So, yesterday I called my SWIFT recruiter and tell her I'm wanting to go to a local school, but still work for SWIFT after I'm done. She asks me why I don't want to go their school. It was from that moment that everything changed. She spent over five minutes trying to change my mind.

Obviuosly, SWIFT wants to sponsor me so that they can own me until the loan is paid back. Plus, I think they are afraid I'll just go work somewhere else after I finish school.

K, this morning I get another call from SWIFT. This guy tells me that he had an email saying that he should talk some sense into me. Then, starts telling me how big a'mistake it would be going to another school. How I made myself look really bad and so forth. He said many things that made alot of sense, but this is all quite weird.

I'll probably have my loan turned down for this local school and have to go to a SWIFT school. Oh well.

I just hope a SWIFT truck doesn't show up at my house or something.

Thanks

P.S. Go to Youtube and search for the phrase "swift really sucks". Can't wait.

Of course they want you to go to a Swift school, they get paid by how many people they send to school; their part has little to do with Swift "owning" you. A car salesperson wants you to buy from them, a recruiter wants you to go to their school. It isn't personal, it's economical - for them. Your trucking career is just that: YOUR trucking career, you have to go to the best school for you and then THE best company you can to start with because it is extremely important for you to stay with your first company at least 6-months, a year is much better, regardless if you're under a school contract or not.
Don't ever take it personal, you'll make much better decisions for yourself.

Swift a good idea?

Postby drives52 on Fri Mar 07, 2008 5:06 pm

Ok - I am new to this all - and I have read what I can find but would really appreciate feedback on what it is really like to get my CDL through Swift and then work for them. I am in my 50's and have no other source of income. Therefore I cannot make a mistake . I have looked at CR England and Swift. Leaning toward Swift - but I am afraid of getting employed and then not being given the miles. And other horror stories you hear. I am intending to be a company driver if I go.
Help me out....what can I expect if I work smart - hard and keep a clean record?
Thanks for any feedback I get! Don - Near Sacramento
