Questions about Swift

Postby Malaki86 on Sat Nov 20, 2004 8:53 am

Ok - I've talked to their recruiters, I've read everything I can find on them on the web, and I've talked to a number of their drivers while OTR.

Things don't add up. I can't find much, if any, good remarks about Swift in reading forums. However, every driver I've talked to is EXTREMELY happy at Swift. I haven't heard a single driver say "Screw 'em. I'm going to XYZ Co to drive."

There are 3 local drivers I've talked to about Swift for literally hours. They get home every weekend (and sometimes through the week), are getting great miles (and great pay to go with it), have dedicated routes, and wouldn't think of driving for anybody else. They've all told me their average pay (per week) is in the range of $1,200 to $1,400. Not bad pay (2x what I make now) and still get home every week.

So - what's the jist?

SWIFT Is Anonymous Entity Beware

Postby Lonerunner on Thu May 05, 2005 10:15 am

Swift is a huge Corporation and every terminial around the country is run differently. Only way a Swift Driver earns over
$1000. is if he or she are trainers. I just left Swift after 17months and would not recommend it as a stepping stone to new drivers if they were my worst enemy. There are very few people working as DM who will be straight with you and Swift makes it so that DMs are the only person you have contact with while on the road. Most DMs at Swift r on short leashes to the fleet manager who can make your life hell because of there illusions of power or lack of it. Swift will tell u anything but rip you off in every cash negotiation, its setup that way. My $500. pet deposit which I hardly used 1/2 I was suposed to get back if I can get thru their maze of so call procedures, automated telephone contacts, and I have nothing to do with that employees. Beware new drivers and student drivers your over the road training is pot-luck and u can wind up just being used as a second log and miles u drive that makes their $1200. net paycheck. If u r a new driver stay away from Lancaster Terminal in Texas as home terminal. Once they put you in a truck they act like they own you and you are their slave all by your lonesome. If you dont go along with the program your fired and service record ruined so u need a lawyer if u can afford one. I drove over 3000 miles to earn $900. and change a few times running out of the pheonix terminal. Roehl, Stevens r better for a new driver.
Swift has been my nightmare. I am so burnt out by their administrative games and I love driving but driving is the easy part with Swift by the time you get going on the road you are worn out. Try spending 2days looking for an empty trailer frm customer to customer in rain and mud. Try waiting frm 7PM to 2 or 3AM for fuel authorization. Try getting documentation errors made by administrative employees on your service record corrected and Swift becomes invisible. No employee has authority to do anything and those that do are not reachable by telephone. I ran hard for Swift made alot of money for them and kept a clean safe truck for them. Safe if and when Swift cooperated in the mechanical up keep of their tractor. I ran a 2000 Columbia w/ bad front end for 6mo and every terminal shp i stopped in couldnt fix it except one.
I refused to drive the truck b/c it cld no longer take wide curves w/o killing myself or others. No exageration.

i will say am with swift, i went thru their academy, and driver training, and i been solo for 3 months. im on my second d.m. cause the first one moved back to mn. and this d.m. i feel is no good.all the d.ms care about is their pockets, they dont care if you run legally or not, cause they dont need to pay for d.o.t. fines.i am on my second truck, the first one was crappy and wasnt running right i had it down for service every week. my second isnt much better,i blew out my turbo the engine over heats when i pull light loads and some of the mechanics at the terminals are lazy, you will probably lose a good day or 2 waiting for truck to be finished.i know personally i am with this company to get expierince. they will also tell you alot there is no freight and we are slow. unfortunately i live in the n.e. region and i like to run that but recently i been run all over the east coast region. but i know where all the freight is and i cant run it. so if you plan on coming to swift be prepared to sit if your not liked by your d.m. i guess if swift proves to me how good they are and gives me a dedicated account here soon i will stay here with out a doubt, but if not well benounced to swift on my way looking for another trucking company to get what i want,to be home with my family more.

Absolute lie! I am not currently training, but I have averaged over $1,000/week since Jan 1, 2005. The first three months of that period are the slowest time of the year for nearly all freight, but especially mine, as I haul dedicated retail freight.

I just left Swift after 17months and would not recommend it as a stepping stone to new drivers if they were my worst enemy.

You were probably not a good driver anyway if you think you have to train to make a grand per week.

Try waiting frm 7PM to 2 or 3AM for fuel authorization.

If you report your fuel correctly on empty calls the computer will automatically fuel you.

Read what the current drivers are posting and trust the drivers you meet in person.

swift warning

Postby sleepy33 on Thu Jul 28, 2005 3:07 pm

bin working solo for swift for 5 months now. have gone through 4 driver managers, cause none of them seem to listen or care about whats going on with you, all they care about is keeping that truck moving so they can make more money. the biggest paycheck i ever got was in the last couple weeks of training.. the 500 dollar a week paychecks. i havnt even come close to making a weekly paycheck like that. i make about 100 to 200 dollars a week,26 cents a mile, then deduct student loan, medical, taxes, driver advances.. sometimes i get nothing at all, because im so broke all the time i have to request driver advances, and company advances for all the toll roads, so my last paycheck... i owed swift the entire thing plus 100 more they say i owe them now. i always heard truck drivers make good money. well, they dont, atleast not starting out with swift. i have asked for as many miles as i can have in a week, and still never get 3000 miles a week.and no one answers any of the phones if you have a question at my terminal. and on weekends? forget about it. they will just put you on hold for hours, while you are in some emergency situation. they wont pay you for multiple stops, they wont pay you for driver unloads, they wont pay you for local pay, even tho they say its all taken care of. it never is. driver reimbursment for recepits doesnt happen, and you have no way of seeing your pay stub till you get your 2 days off a month.. and try calling pay roll? they will never answer their phones either..and if you are on hometime and have a medical emergency and need a couple more days off to see a doctor or dentist, you better hope it hasnt bin a week already, because they dont care whats going on with you, they will tell you if you dont get back to work, someone is coming to pick up the truck, even if you fax them medical records and proof you are ill.they also never informed me that if you get one flagrant over speed, that you will be fired if you get one more in a 12 month period. they never told me about that policy, untill i was written up for a flagrant overspeed.how do you think swift got to be the biggest richest truck driving company? by treating their drivers good? i think not. oh, and their directions to customer and shipper are always wrong. i think they enjoy getting you lost.not to mention you are never paid for the total miles of a trip, even while following their fuel route to the tee. most of my trips are always about 100 to 200 miles over what they said. sometimes more. if you are planning on starting a driving career with swift, i'd suggest go getting a job at your local fast food joint. you will make more money and most likley be treated better.if i can survive off a 100 dollars a week for another year. i will have enough experience to go somewhere else and start making a living..
